World Ocean covers more than 72% of the planet surface. But as citizens, local authorities, economic sectors and civil society, what do we know about the oceans, the state of their ecosystems or the services they deliver to society? Do we (individually and collectively) know enough for us to act responsibly, so the pressures on marine ecosystems are reduced and opportunities offered by the oceans duly seized?
RESPONSEABLE’S OBJECTIVES
To contribute to the sharing of knowledge on the human-ocean relationships; To support the development of cost-effective initiatives and strategies on ocean literacy in Europe; To raise the awareness of specific target groups on their role and responsibility to achieving the sustainable development of the oceans; Overall, contributing to changes in behavior of key stakeholders, so pressures on marine ecosystems are reduced and opportunities, offered by the ocean, duly sized. This research will build towards an interactive and publicly accessible ocean knowledge system which can be used to develop and test innovative targeted communication materials including social media activities and serious games. It will also feed into the development of clear guidance for ocean literacy decision makers on the development of effective strategies. The RESPONSEABLE project is regionally focused, and will cover North and Atlantic, Black, Baltic and Mediterranean seas, mobilising regional stakeholders and building on existing initiatives.
THE PARTNERS
A consortium of 15 partners and 3 transatlantic contributors, coordinated by ACTeon, will work on ResponSEAble. The strengths of our Consortium are:
The combination of expertise and skills; The capacity to cover all components of the ocean knowledge system, from the production of knowledge to its final use; Experience in a wide range of communication and literacy products and initiatives; Its coverage of the main regional seas relevant to the EU (the Black Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Atlantic façade); Its transatlantic dimension; An excellent access to the main regional, European and international Networks on Marine knowledge.

The Cultural and Creative Sector (CCS) have been strongly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, especially those sub-sectors most dependent on the presence of public, due to suspended live cultural events, which put more than 7 million jobs at risk in the EU (Morellato et al., 2020). The pandemic accelerated the digitalisation process, transforming the cultural experience (OECD, 2020), but many smaller CCS actors are not properly skilled to benefit from the new opportunities (IDEA Consult et al., 2021). The CCS is essential for socio-economic recovery, as it can encourage people’s wellbeing and resilience and promote a shared sense of European identity (Wahba et al., 2020; EC, 2020). To enable the CCS to continue to fulfill its primary function and support its recovery and resilience, CCS actors need to be urgently equipped with digital skills and capacity to harness digital opportunities. The European VET systems play a central role in preparing people and businesses to undertake the digital transition, and thus need to be modernised in order to close the existing skill gap. Yet, in many EU countries, VET programmes are still unprepared to reflect the current challenges (CEDEFOP, 2020). The pandemic hindered the delivery of VET programmes, revealing scarce ability to use digital tools, motivate learners, ensure the continuity of learning and equal opportunities for all, which increased the risk of drop-out (ILO, 2020). This is alarming as education and training are the true enablers of innovation, contributing to the workforce upskilling, and increasing employability. Unprecedented technological progress brings new business opportunities, creates new jobs, reforms the way we work and, importantly, determinates what, when and how people need to learn (Morellato et al., 2020). Digitalisation is not the only factor of change: demographic, environmental, political and economic challenges require greater emphasis on VET, enabling it to reconcile sustained productivity and adequate distribution of the benefits of growth (CEDEFOP, 2020). To ensure the central role of European VET systems to prepare people and business to the digital transition and overcome the existing skill gap, VET providers need to be agile, resilient and ready to react to skill demand changes. To face these challenges, RestART will address the following target groups: - CCS actors needing to improve their digital and transversal vocational skills: Members of the creative, cultural and artistic organisations, small creative businesses, grassroot cultural organisations, individual creators, artists and freelancers especially from the sub-sector of the performing arts and heritage, including people from disadvantaged groups. - CCS- oriented VET providers: Public and private VET providers offering training related to cultural and creative disciplines, that are not confident and sufficiently skilled in using digital technologies in training and wish to acquire the necessary competences to adapt to the new trends.
RestART’s main objective is to support the digital transition and resilience of CCS actors by enhancing the ability of VET providers in creative disciplines to adapt their training offer to current and future needs of labour market, economy and society.

REMARKABLE (Rural Environmental Monitoring via ultra wide-ARea networKs And distriButed federated Learning) is a project funded by the European Commission under HORIZON-MSCA-2021-SE-01 – Staff Exchanges programme. The project comprises 11 European and 5 African institutions, coordinated by PDM E FC PROJECTO DESENVOLVIMENTO MANUTENÇÃO FORMAÇÃO E CONSULTADORIA LDA, Lisbon. The project started on 1 January 2023 and will last until 31 December 2026.
Internet of Things (IoT) technology combined with complementary support for data analytics is the corner stone of today’s digital transformation. The societal and economic impact of IoT/ML systems in urban and suburban areas significantly outpaces the one in rural areas due to a limited reach of connectivity infrastructure.
REMARKABLE aims at reversing further widening of the urban-rural gap. This will be done by bringing efficient and affordable IoT/ML solutions to deep rural areas, reaching out to applications and use cases ranging from wildlife management, rural tourism, livestock monitoring, water and air pollution control, and others. By identifying main gaps in connectivity and affordable data analytics and through interleaved research, development and validation in a real-world setting, REMARKABLE will address the challenge of bringing IoT and data analytics systems a step closer to seamless, energy efficient and secure deployment in rural areas.

Past
Microalgae are eukaryotic, unicellular and photosynthetic organisms that have great potential for producing fatty acids, pigments such as carotenoids and chlorophyll, as well as other metabolites of interest in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. There are few records in the literature showing the use of microalgae in cosmetic preparations, and there is also no information on the safety and efficacy of these products. This project aimed to seek the biotechnological potential of two species of microalgae Neochloris oleoabundans UTEX 1185 and Ankistrodesmus braunni UTEX 245 aiming for their application in the cosmetics industry. Biomass and/or its biocompounds were incorporated into cosmetic formulations. The safety and efficacy of formulations were determined through non-invasive evaluation of the biophysical properties of the skin, conducted through the use of skin bioengineering equipment; and by the in vivo antioxidant/anti-inflammatory activity of cosmetic formulations containing microalgae using a methodology combining the application of methyl nicotinate and Laser Doppler flowmetry.

The sustainable Information Technologies for Societies project implements AISS – Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Societies 120 ECTS Joint Masters programme including mobility, internships and granting multiple degrees (level 7 in ISCED 2011). SITeS–JM increases the number of participants (100 students) and a wide range of public and private organisations (around 30) to enhance inclusive and equitable quality education in sustainable digital societies. Sustainable Development Goals, ethics, and European values are stressed to bring resilience to change (Digital Education Action Plan). The digital skills (European Innovation Agenda) are educated to talents who can boost innovation capacity and have digital competencies, e.g., in artificial intelligence (AI) and data-driven decision-making. The Digital Targets 2030 promote new talents in digital rights and principles, where people are at the centre of designing and acting in a fair online environment, safe from illegal and harmful content. AISS answer those through its three educational pillars, a) AI and Data Science, which focuses on AI and data-driven decision-making; b) Sustainable Digital Societies, which tackles the European Skills Agenda and c) Active Citizenship, which handles the Digital targets demands on citizen active participation in democratic societies, engagement in the democratic processes and have control over their data. The project has a unique organisation of studies with novel hybrid pedagogies, Interdisciplinary project-based courses with real clients, and designs micro-credentials with the associate partners on relevant topics to society and the labour market. The programme is co-created by Tallinn University (Estonia), Tampere University (Finland), Lusófona University(Portugal), Associate partners: Citizen OS, Estonian Anthropocene Center NGO, Lääne-Harju municipality, Inspirators! and the collaborative partners Tampere City and Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE.
Information and knowledge have never been as valuable as they are today. Thanks to the evolution of media and, specifically, digital media, information is now more immediate, infinitely shareable and self-generating. However, looking at the other side of the coin, these aspects mean that information and knowledge have never been as dangerous for citizenship as they are today. Immediacy can result in a low level of information processing; the possibility of infinite sharing can lead to mutations in the original information; and the capacity for self-generation can lead to situations of misinformation. Therefore, there is still a great need to study and reflect on digital environments and to discuss disinformation and the dangers associated with it.
The SMaRT-EU project aims to provide tools, suggestions and resources to train young people, older adults and educators to be more resilient to misinformation and fake news. With a main focus on social media and the phenomenon of fake news, the project seeks to create a repository and new materials related to critical engagement with media, especially social media, that are usable by the targeted end-user groups. This repository collects materials, in a systematised way, targeted at each of the end-user groups and related to the three main themes covered by the project. In turn, the new materials developed by the project team aim to provide useful and easily usable content for ordinary citizens or in diverse educational contexts.
In addition, the project will also carry out workshops on fake news, critical agency for social media and media for civic agency on a local level with young people and older adults. The aim is to empower participants in critical and agentive media literacy, by addressing pressing media literacy and civic engagement themes.

The research project Stereo Visual Culture aims to characterize the visual culture of stereoscopy in Portugal based on its photographic images and the corresponding specialized discourses in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
The motivation for this project is related to the fact that the contemporary visual culture is strongly investing in techniques and devices which expand the visuality beyond the purely optical experiences: The immersive environments of virtual reality games, the tactile interaction with several screens and the 3D techniques are major stakes of the current visual industries to seduce the spectators, involving the participation of their bodies and perceptions. Stereoscopic photography of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century was structured from a program very close to our contemporary visual culture, standing out as a remarkable landmark of its archaeology. This project, therefore, aims to resume the reflection on a medium which has been abandoned by the popular or artistic usage of photography, as well as insufficiently studied in Portugal. It is studying a significant part of the collections of stereoscopic photography available in Portuguese public archives and museums, as well as the discourses about stereoscopy published in newspapers and magazines specialized in photography from 1869 to 1945.

STORYline: Shaping Youth Citizenship Through Intergenerational Approaches and Digital Narratives

History underlines the fundamental role of youth in transforming society, as they have historically mobilised against injustice and inequality, demanding greater rights to participation and representation. Research indicates that youth engagement in civic processes leads to positive outcomes, but this is not a widespread scenario. Youth, particularly those from non-dominant backgrounds, remain underrepresented in decision-making processes, subject to disparities and at risk of exclusion (United Nations, 2021). Furthermore, even if extensive literature focuses on formal educational settings, other learning environments and their impact on building citizenship (Allaste et al., 2021) and digital media's impact on these relationships have received less attention. Especially contexts that explore interconnections between 3 vertices: intergenerational relationships with educators and digital media's impact on citizenship values, experiences, and perceptions. STORYline is an exploratory project that aims to advance intergenerational and youth citizenship scholarship by delving into 3 questions: 1) How do intergenerational relationships shape and impact youths' citizenship experiences and perceptions? 2) What influence do adult figures have on youth's citizenship perspectives, and 3) What impact do digital media have on how citizenship narratives are built?
