  • Nanotechnology (NT) is a generic term for techniques, materials, and devices that operate on a manometric scale and represents one of the most promising technologies of the 21st century; and has been considered a new industrial revolution. Nanoencapsulation of active antioxidant compounds represents a future perspective for the development of innovative photoprotective ingredients. Gelatin nanoparticles have been used to develop modified drug and gene delivery systems, as well as drug carriers to specific target sites in the organism. There is no record in the scientific literature of its use in topical application vehicles, intended for cosmetic use. The proposal of this project involved obtaining innovative gelatin nanostructures (containing rutin) for application in sunscreens. The safety and clinical efficacy of the developed nanotechnology platform were assessed by: in vitro skin penetration of gelatin nanoparticles containing rutin, in vertical diffusion cells, using the human epidermis as a biomembrane model; non-invasive assessment of the biophysical properties of the skin, conducted using skin bioengineering equipment.

    • ETIKETA will promote the design and test of transnational cooperation instruments based on proposed co-created European criteria, for the delivery of a joint European degree label for joint transnational higher education programmes. ETIKETA builds on the consortium's experience in the promotion of the European University FilmEU and several existing joint degrees led by the Higher Education institutions (HEIs) involved in this and in other Alliances. ETIKETA integrates an Alliance of HEIs and several national authorities and stakeholders, in view of testing and developing a label for European joint degrees that recognises the value of these innovative transnational learning experiences and increases the visibility, attractiveness, and reputation of joint programmes provided by alliances of European HEIs, both in Europe and beyond. ETIKETA includes several research and design stages, amidst moments of joint reflection and public sharing of results, in order to ensure the production of outcomes of the proposed pilot that will facilitate the delivery of a joint European degree label and the provision of joint degrees by European HEIs. ETIKETA builds on strong past experience in this domain and an innovative concept and methodology in order to attain outcomes that will facilitate and promote the future provision of European Joint Degrees.

    • Cancer is a leading cause of death, mostly due to drug resistance. Homologous recombination is an essential cellular mechanism of ADN repair. Several proteins are involved in this process, including BRCA1 in association with its binding partner BARD1. Alterations in this mechanism are found in several cancers and there is strong evidence that targeting these deficiencies can result in therapeutic benefit.

      A defective homologous recombination, resulting from BRCA1/2-mutations, proved to be decisive for the efficacy of PARP inhibitors, which are currently in the front line to treat BRCA-mutated cancers such as triple-negative breast, and advanced ovarian cancers and some pancreatic tumors. This approach is based on synthetic lethality. PARP inhibition results in increased DNA double strand breaks, which are not efficiently repaired by homologous recombination in BRCA1/2-deficient cells, causing genomic instability and thus selective death of cancer cells.

      Despite the great success of PARP inhibitors, resistance to these agents has been often reported due to residual BRCA1 activity, highly limiting their clinical use. Thus, dysfunction of the BRCA1 pathway has been considered as an effective strategy to improve the therapeutic efficiency of PARP inhibitors.

      Recently, we identified a monoterpene indole alkaloid derivative (BBIT20) that targeted homologous recombination DNA repair defects by disrupting BRCA1-BARD1 heterodimer in triple-negative breast and ovarian cancer cells. It showed promising in vitro and in vivo antitumor activity and interacted synergistically with cisplatin and the PARP inhibitor olaparib. BBIT20 was the first reported disrupter of BRCA1-BARD1 complex and may represent a starting point for the development of new and improved anticancer agents against hard-to-treat cancers that still lack effective therapeutic options.

      Therefore, using an innovative approach toward unmet needs not only in triple-negative breast and advanced ovarian cancers but also in pancreatic cancer, this project aims at

      i) finding new effective plant-derived indole alkaloids for reversing drug resistance in cancer cells, with deficient BRCA1 pathway, by disrupting BRCA1-BARD1 complex and ii) characterizing the disrupting binding mode of BBIT20 of BRCA1-BARD1 interaction by in silico studies.

      • Skin is the largest organ of the body, covering an area of 1.5–2 m2 and is affected by several external environmental factors such as ultraviolet radiation, air pollution, smoking. Its main functions are temperature regulation, immunity from microorganisms, maintaining electrolyte balance, and protection from physical injuries, chemical agents and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Skin ageing is one of the most important phenotypes of ageing and occurs in every layer of the skin, primarily due to the degradation of its components. In the last decades, people pay more and more attention to appearance, and skincare and anti-ageing have become one of the hot spots of world concern. Thus, the skin care market based on natural products continues to see strong growth. In this context, the research of naturally occurring anti-ageing agents is greatly expanding and in recent years numerous plant-derived products have been investigated.

        In addition, there is in nowadays efforts in search of value aggregation to sub products of the industrial processes. Dehydroabietic acid (DAA) is a natural diterpene and major component of the rosin fraction of oleoresin produced by conifer species, such as grand fir (Abies grandis) and lodgepo le pine (Pinus contorta). It is a substance present in significant quantities in the paper mill effluents. However, previous studies have demonstrated that DAA has antiaging effects in human dermal fibroblasts.

        Skin ageing is closely related with Ultraviolet exposure and as well as skin microcirculation alterations vascular ageing-related. However, there is no investigation about the potential benefits of formulations containing DAA in human skin. Thus, the purpose of this work is to develop nanotechnology-based formulations containing DAA, as well as to evaluate the effects of them on human skin considering biomechanical, hydration, microcirculation aspects, and irritative potential. It is expected that this work will be the first step to allow the use of this substance in the cosmetic formulations, as well as to value DAA which in current is a subproduct in the cellulose industry.

        • EXPLORER proposes the development of a human intervention study to
          evaluate the effect of ellagitannin-rich pomegranate supplements in the
          metabolic and β-cells functional markers, IAPP aggregation risk, urolithin B
          (UroB) circulating levels, and microbiota status in individuals with pre-diabetes
          to test the hypothesis that UroB is the bioactive molecule improving metabolic
          health via mitigation of IAPP cytotoxicity. Given the poor UroB bioavailability
          and scarcity of information on its tissue distribution, an innovative
          nanotechnology solution, followed by the required safety studies, is proposed to
          ensure the proper delivery of the molecule to β-cells in the pancreatic tissue.
          With this experimental design, the team expects to overcome the limitations
          associated with the low circulating concentrations of UroB provided by the diet.
          A powerful Science Communication plan was designed to efficiently
          disseminate the findings for stakeholders at the community, academia, and
          industry levels, to improve literacy about diabetes and mainly its prevention.

          • Co-funded by the Gulbenkian Knowledge Academies, the project “Educational centers with digital and civic skills” – DiCi-Educa aims to improve the civic and media skills of young people (14-18 years old) institutionalized in Educational Centers (CE) of the Directorate-General for Reinsertion and Prison Services (DGRSP).

            In particular, it aims to provide and articulate adaptability skills to the use of digital in relation to the surrounding context at the level of: communication, creative thinking and problem solving.

            We favor collaborative work and learning to learn to help young people to better position themselves within the EC and return to life in society.

            We propose to use the media in conjunction with social thematic components. The promotion of skills crossed with other personal and social skills are essential elements in the lives of these young people and in their reintegration into a heavily mediated society.

            COFAC is the coordinating entity of the project, which was developed by our research unit CICANT, and has DGRSP as a direct partner.             • Fostering the equal participation and representation of women and men in political decision making by developing and implementing national and European gender equality strategies.

              For most of democracy’s history, women were not allowed to participate in politics as voters or candidates. This changed in the 19th century with the women’s suffrage movement, and by 2015 all countries had granted women the right to vote.

              However, as of 2019, women only hold 24.3% of parliamentary seats globally, and political power for women is insufficient in Europe according to the Gender Equality Index.

              Despite efforts to increase gender equality in politics, the political sphere remains a the challenge for women: women are underrepresented in political decision-making at all levels: regional, national and local government.

              The project focuses on the equal participation and representation of women and men in political decision making.

              Proposed activities:

              1. Research based piece mapping National gender equality strategies to promoting equal representation of women and men in political decision making and the correlation between those strategies and voters’ behavior related to ender equality. Cross country comparison; countries higher vs lower in the equality index. Produce a scientific publication related to these findings.

              2. Development of national strategies to promote equality between men and women in political decision making. These will be bespoke to both counties scoring higher or lower on the equality index. Emphasis will be given to sharing best practices, embedding robust Impact Measurement processes in order to quantify and track the succession of these strategies for each sector.

              3. Engagement with local political parties national bodies related to gender equality to locally inject the findings of the research and translate into National policies. Using platforms such as public dialogues, conferences and round table discussions with related individuals.

              4. Organize media strategies specifically to be utilized during key electoral moments.

            • The FEMglocal project stems from the lack of international research on the connection between digital networked action and feminist movements, which have been emerging in not always foreseen bursts, taking on a glocal dimension (global and local). These flows between the global and the local, the digital and the face-to-face pose challenges to feminist movements that need to be understood through a situational approach.

              Taking into account the interactions and contradictions between global and local activisms, and rooted in digital communication and in the national context, this project aims to i) frame the current Portuguese feminism vis-à-vis global feminism, but also in relation to local feminisms; ii) understand its genealogy, size and geographical distribution; iii) understand the relationship between institutional organizations and between these and informal collectives; iv) analyse the movement's communication strategies – organizations and collectives; v) study the methods of mobilization and collective action; vi) examine the media visibility of global feminist movements; vii) understand how Portuguese collectives are arranged as a social movement due to observed volatility in the way they appear and disappear.
