  • This proposal addresses the lack of significant research in the field of animation and its potential to impact on the health and wellbeing of young people in stressful situations in healthcare contexts particularly in waiting spaces for attending patients and accompanying family or caregivers. Artists and scholars have identified the “Haptic Eye” linking the screen/vision and sensation, but it still proves elusive in practice and in evidence-based studies. Therefore this study addresses the lack of evaluation of moving image installations and innovates in terms of the production of animation as a collaborative and interdisciplinary process considering psychological impact. We combine visual research and innovative animated solutions with psychological testing, to generate new knowledge on evaluating non-verbal art through verbal and nonverbal methods.

    The intention is to establish animated moving images potential as a tool in the wellbeing sector and expand the audience in general to elevate animation's role in moving image culture.

    • The smart healthcare domain utilizing a combination of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and medical Internet of Things devices is
      undoubtedly transforming the healthcare industry as it can deliver new applications and solutions that benefit patients, doctors and hospitals. Improved treatment, cost reduction and faster diagnosis are some of the advantages that smart healthcare brings to healthcare stakeholders. First, AI can be utilized to efficiently process data for improved disease diagnosis in medical images including liver lesion classification and segmentation, brain tumor segmentation, breast cancer detection, etc. Besides, AI can assist in securing the healthcare system from cybersecurity attacks that target the operation of medical IoT devices or sensitive medical data. However, the common assumption with AI is that the training, testing and deployment environment is benign and trustworthy. This assumption, however, does not hold true in general. As a matter of fact, research in this area has shown that small perturbations in the important features of AI models during training or testing phase can trivially undermine their performance. This gives rise to adversarial AI, in which attackers can trick healthcare AI models to degrade their diagnostic or cybersecurity detection performance.
      ANTIDOTE project objective is to create a sustainable European and inter-sectoral network of organizations working on a joint
      research programme in the interdisciplinary fields of Healthcare, AI and Cybersecurity. The participants will exchange skills and knowledge which will allow them to design and develop concrete mechanisms to evaluate the robustness of AI models and propose novel methods to ensure their secure, safe, resilient and robust operations in the healthcare domain. The outcomes of the ANTIDOTE project will have a significant benefit for European society, while strengthening the collaborative research between the different countries and sectors.

    • Understanding the patterns and mechanisms behind news consumption and avoidance in the hyperconnected media ecosystem is crucial for fostering democratic participation and informed societies. Traditional methods of studying these behaviours, such as self-report surveys, and more recent approaches such as digital-trace data collection, often come with limitations and biases.

      In this research project, we introduce an innovative approach to address these challenges through the AIDiAL system—an intelligent, dialogical news delivery application. AIDiAL is designed to simulate a real-world news consumption environment, enabling the collection of nuanced interaction data while mitigating self-report response biases. This system segments content into utterance snippets to capture externalised behavioural data, which can be integrating with self-report information to offer a comprehensive understanding of news engagement dynamics.

      AIDiAL enables fine-grained, conversational, yet naturalistic interactions with news content through which we expect to reveal the complex causal factors behind several phenomena in the information ecosystem including, e.g. news avoidance (across different demographics, with a particular focus on understanding inter-generational dynamics), the roles of algorithmic literacy in determining people’s news “diets”. The primary goal of this research is to develop robust methodological tools in media studies to derive scientifically valid and replicable inferences that explain content consumption behaviours. AIDiAL seeks to support more informed, critically thinking societies relying on the collection of fine-grained data on human behaviour within the information ecosystem.

      This project will contribute significantly to the advancement of media research methodologies and our understanding of news engagement across diverse populations.

      • The general objective of the project is to prevent vulnerable audiences from starting a process of radicalisation by offering them resilience and critical thinking mechanisms, as well as convince those already engaged within a process of radicalisation to abandon it or dissuade them from going further by providing an alternative narrative that deconstructs extremist rhetoric, in order to change violent behaviour.

        This will be achieved through 7 social media campaigns, 3 of which targeting audiences vulnerable to Islamist extremism:

        Community Heroes: aims to provide resilience mechanisms, such as sense of community belonging or identity to vulnerable young people (aged 12-16) from Muslim communities through 3 animated short videos;
        Narratives of Global Islam: to empower Muslim communities through specific features of Islam, such as fundamental rights based on testimonies from Muslim leaders or activists (5 short videos);
        The True Face of Extremism: To present the reality of violent extremism based on former extremists, their families and friends, in order to deconstruct idealistic views (3 short videos).
        Furthermore, 2 campaigns will target audiences vulnerable to far-right extremism:

        Conspiracy theories – from satire to danger: to demystify social myths and conspiracy theories propagated by far-right extremism through a factual and humorous tone (5 videos);
        What it’s like to be part of a far-right violent group: to share real narratives that identify the risks associated with being a former far-right violent extremist based on real experiences (3 short videos).
        Lastly, 2 campaigns will be produced that target the common citizen, generally vulnerable to polarisation, misinformation and extremism:

        • The goal of ACFs project is to develop new metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of antibiotics to increase their solubility, and consequently bioavailability, trying also to explore synergetic effects with the metal, such as zinc, silver and bismuth, to increase the antibiotic’s efficacy. Actually, both factors lead to enhanced efficacy. MOFs proposed herein are also a viable way for a more controlled delivery and release of antibiotics.

          Another important point of ACFs project is that mechanochemistry is the main synthetic pathway proposed in this project. This is an environment-friendly technique that drastically reduces the amount of solvents and it has proven to be very efficient in different areas including MOFs’ synthesis.

          The interest on metal-organic frameworks towards pharmacological applications has been increasing, especially for controlled drug delivery and release. However, the coordination of metals can also be an alternative way to induce significant changes in previously known drugs, changing important properties such as solubility and bioavailability, with the further advantage that synergetic effects of the metal can be explored enhancing its performance.

          Bactericidal agents, including antibiotics, drastically reduced the number of deaths caused by infections over the last 70 years. However, due to their misuse and abuse, many microorganisms developed resistance mechanisms, causing only in Europe approximately 25000 deaths/year, an economic burden over 1.5 bilion € and productivity losses. Thus, there is a growing concern about the proliferation of these multi-resistant Gram-negative microorganisms against which the antibiotics have become less effective and it is indeed one of the great challenges of today’s society.

          • Skin cancer is the most diagnosed type of cancer in the world, with excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the Sun being its main cause. Oxidative stress, one of the factors responsible for the development of carcinomas, is also associated with frequent exposure to UV radiation. The use of photoprotective formulations is the most effective measure to protect against the malignant effects of this type of radiation. In addition to containing elements that absorb and/or reflect them, they also contain components that can help with skin homeostasis, such as antioxidant agents. In this study, ferulic acid, a natural compound recognized as a potential antioxidant, was used, together with two solar filters, bemotrizinol and octyl triazone, to carry out biosafety and efficacy methods, with the aim of improving techniques, in addition to a better elucidation of the effects of ferulic acid. In vivo, in vitro and ex vivo techniques were used to characterize elements such as inflammatory potential, antioxidative potential, molecule permeability and hydration.

            • It is crucial for the Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Industries to improve the efficacy of drug delivery systems. Nonetheless, there are several challenges to overcome in this process, such as poor drug solubility, loading or release and even the low stability of these systems, while ensuring the safety of the developed formulations. Ionic liquids may be a valuable strategy to surpass these challenges since through synthesis they may be tailored to attain the most suitable properties for the required applicability and also because they may be incorporated into various types of solutions, thus facilitating their incorporation into different formulations. Thus, in this study, several ILs will be synthesized and their applicability as functional excipients, at non-toxic concentrations, will be evaluated in different delivery systems.

              • The predominant hypothesis for Alzheimer's disease (AD) is amyloid, which establishes changes in the proteolytic processing of amyloid precursor protein resulting in the accumulation of amyloid beta peptide (Aβ), forming amyloid plaques, which trigger an immunological response that promotes neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration. However, the association between genetic and non-genetic risk factors for the development of neuroinflammatory diseases, mainly AD, has been widely discussed in the scientific community and much is said about the influence of the intestinal microbiota in modulating neuro-immune functions. and strong evidence reinforcing the gut-brain link has emerged in recent decades.

                Therefore, endotoxins, especially lipopolysaccharide (LPS), have been adopted as a strong non-genetic risk factor for AD neurodegeneration as they promote activation of both systemic and central pro-inflammatory pathways, in addition to having already been documented. presence of LPS in Aβ peptides in amyloid plaques and vascular endothelium of patients with AD. Based on the above, this research proposal aims to elucidate through which neuro-immune or systemic mechanisms an inflammatory bowel disease can influence cognitive decline and a neuroinflammatory process.
