THE STARTING POINT
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the biggest threat among skin conditions in terms of causing patients’ disability and its prevalence is still rising every day [1, 2]. A hallmark of AD is the epidermal barrier dysfunction due to abnormal lipid metabolism causing alterations in the ceramides and fatty acid profiles [3, 4]. Gold standard approaches to treat AD include the daily administration of topical emollients together with the reactive administration of glucocorticoids (GC) during the crisis [5]. This therapeutic approach is far from ideal due to corticophobia and the safety issues of GC therapy. In this context, the proactive regimen is gaining more and more followers, comprising the long-term and low-dose administration of GC and emollients in pre-lesional areas [5, 6]. Sustainable technological approaches are hot topics in R&D&I and in current European Union and UnitedNations development policies. Europe needs locally produced biomaterials as the basis for innovative formulations, among which Hermetia illucens larvae oil seems to be particularly promising to tackle AD due to its fatty acid composition [7, 8]. Moreover, biobased ionic liquids are recognized as green functional materials with great potential to be applied in drug delivery systems [9-12]. Lipid-based nanocarriers seem to be the most suitable platform, due to skin compatibility [13], to combine these biomaterials with barrier enhancing ceramides in order to ultimately deliver emollients and low-dose GC in a cutting-edge formulation to tackle AD.
THE STRATEGY FOR INNOVATION
BIOMATNANO4AD aims to fulfil the current needs in AD management through a bioinspired, nanotechnological, and sustainable approach combining multifunctional biomaterials in lipid-based nanocarriers that cansynergically perform as GC delivery systems and topical emollients. The pentagonal coalition of ceramides, insect oil, ionic liquids, nanotechnology, and glucocorticoids in an innovative multifunctional nanoformulation will allow overcoming existing therapeutic limitations of AD. The product development strategy will be based on the initial optimization and characterization of lipid-based nanocarriers, followed by enhancement of nanosystem performance using biobased ionic liquids. The optimized nanosystems by quality-by-design(QbD) strategies will then proceed to in vitro and in vivo safety assessments. Finally, the efficacy of biocompatible nanoformulations will be tested through in vitro and in vivo methodologies. At the end of BIOMATNANO4AD, it is expected that at least one nanoformulation will have reached a preclinical stage, with potential to make a significant contribution towards a cost-effective treatment to ultimately upgrade the quality of life for AD patients.
THE RIGHT KNOW-HOW
The accomplishment of the ambitious objectives ofBIOMATNANO4AD will be ensured by the know-how of a multidisciplinary team of CBIOS researchers and by the strategic collaborations with a biotech company (EntoGreen) andleading scientific institutions (LAQV and Vienna University). Expertise in the optimization of nanoformulations following a QbD approach [14] decreases the risk and increases the capacity to obtain a nanosystem with optimal stability characteristics, and an adequate safety and efficacy performance. Proficiency in taking full advantage of bioinspired products will be useful in the application of ceramides, insect oil, and ionic liquids in skin formulations [7-12]. Finally, the advanced skills of the research team also enable the successful invitro and in vivo assessment of the cytotoxicity and bioactivity performances of the innovative formulations [11, 15-17]. Meticulously planned collaborations with partners of excellence have been established to further boost product development. This befitting team will also be dedicated to dissemination and communication activities so that the major breakthroughs of BIOMATNANO4AD can be shortly available for the scientific community, academia, pharmaceutical industry, patients’ associations, and general society.

BYTE-Film (Bridging Young Talent and Entrepreneurship in the Film and Audiovisual Industries) is a European educational initiative that aims to strengthen entrepreneurial capacity, innovation skills, and digital readiness among emerging professionals in the film and audiovisual sectors.
The project responds to major challenges facing Europe's audiovisual industries, including rapid technological change, the growing influence of artificial intelligence and extended reality technologies, evolving audience behaviours, funding constraints, and increasing global competition. BYTE-Film seeks to equip students and young professionals with the tools needed to navigate these transformations and create sustainable careers in the cultural and creative sectors.
Developed through a collaboration between Lusófona University (Portugal), SP Televisão (Portugal), and Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology – IADT (Ireland), and supported by the wider FilmEU Alliance, BYTE-Film delivers a specialised Masters level module focused on entrepreneurship, innovation, and digital transformation in film and audiovisual media. C-Accelerate is focused on increasing the innovation and entrepreneurial capacity in higher education in the fields of the arts and creative practices. It brings together five European Higher Education Institutes & partners that provide Entrepreneurial Education to students by sharing expertise. All partners work towards incrementally improving the degree to which entrepreneurship is included within the core ecosystem of the future European University and to which innovation is central in its consolidation.
In 2022 the C-Accelerate project was launched and LUCA School of Arts partnered up with four other Higher Education Institutes (HEI): BFM - Tallinn University, Lusófona University Lisbon, Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art Design and Technology Dublin and Aalto University. All those HEI partners have strong expertise and participation in different KICs, along with several industry and public organisations. The five institutions have a joined partnership with AaltoES (Aalto Entrepreneurship Society, the most active student-run entrepreneurship society in Europe). Together, the consortium will work towards incrementally improving the degree to which entrepreneurship is included within the core ecosystem of the future European University and to which innovation is central in its consolidation.
All project partners are deeply involved in developing and promoting entrepreneurial activity and seek to put this at the centre of the future European University. LUCA takes part as consortium member of FilmEU, together with Aalto University and all other full and associated partners, these institutions will collaborate around the common objective of promoting entrepreneurial education, innovation, and research activities in the multidisciplinary field of the cultural and creative sectors and industries (CCSI).
Building on the partners’ HEInnovate self-assessments, existing KIC expertise and FilmEU-established portfolio of educational and entrepreneurial initiatives, C-Accelerate presents an ambitious Innovation Vision Action Plan geared towards the partner’s long-term vision.
C-Accelerate covers four related dimensions that represent the pillars of the project: entrepreneurial education, project development and business acceleration, support structures for creativity and knowledge transfer, and collaboration and institutional engagement. These four pillars articulate the actions the project proposes across the knowledge triangle.
C-Accelerate is the proposal of FilmEU, Aalto University (project coordinator), and AaltoES. C-Accelerate will accelerate the role of creative communities through the exploration of entrepreneurial education and radical creativity within European education, through training, capacity building, and the development of new tools and processes. Building on Aalto's experience such as in its leading International Design Business Management Masters, and closely integrated with the work of FilmEU in its Erasmus Mundus postgraduate programmes and a range of entrepreneurial and industry-related projects in the participating institutions, C-Accelerate will over two years strengthen the innovation potential of the HEIs, and deepen and develop links with key associated partners, including municipalities, enterprises, and investors. This new project is one of a set of initiatives funded by the EIT, which has as its goal that higher education institutions develop and implement action plans to improve their entrepreneurial and innovation capacity across all institutional levels. The EIT, founded in 2008, brings together leading business, education, and research organisations to form dynamic cross-border partnerships, dedicated to finding solutions to specific global challenges.

C-ACCELERATE Plus builds on the success of the original C-ACCELERATE project and aims to enhance innovation and entrepreneurial capacity in higher education institutions (HEIs) within the cultural and creative sectors and industries (CCSI). Anchored in the FilmEU Alliance, the project expands the network by integrating new HEIs from Widening and RIS countries and scaling its activities through business acceleration, inclusive training programmes, and joint innovation structures.
The consortium includes seven HEIs from seven European countries and partners from industry and the not-for-profit sector. Together, they will deliver targeted support for students, researchers, academic and non-academic staff to develop entrepreneurial mindsets, launch start-ups, and co-create innovative solutions for the digital and green transition within CCSI.
C-ACCELERATE Plus will: - Implement new accelerator programmes and project-based incubation formats; - Develop micro-credentials and sector-specific short courses across partner institutions; - Establish joint infrastructures such as creative factories and an Artistic Intelligence Transfer Office; - Build mentoring networks involving academia, industry, and alumni; - Strengthen institutional engagement and support structures for innovation and entrepreneurship.
By leveraging experiential learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a strong focus on regional ecosystem engagement, the project seeks to institutionalise entrepreneurship education and ensure the long-term sustainability of innovation activities in the arts and creative industries.

The Carlos Relvas Stereo Raisonné is an online catalogue that aggregates for the first time ten public and private collections of stereoscopic cards by Carlos Relvas (1838-1894), matching them with their corresponding negatives kept at the House-Studio Carlos Relvas in Golegã.
Produced by the Early Visual Media Lab (CICANT, Lusófona University), this catalogue aims to contribute to the research and dissemination of Portuguese photographic heritage, allowing one to explore the collections with simple or multi-level search, record and analyse images in a personal account, or download them.
The Carlos Relvas Stereo Raisonné also presents a timeline that combines the main moments of Carlos Relvas's career with historical facts of photography and the exhibitions that made him famous in Portugal and abroad.
To enable the stereoscopic experience of these images in a digital interface, the catalogue also includes anaglyph versions of the stereoviews and GIF animations that allow us to evaluate the artistic value of Carlos Relvas’s stereoscopic photography.

Checking the fact-checkers: practices and effectiveness in southern Europe

Checking the Fact-checkers observes the main practices, agenda impact, audience attitudes and effectiveness of three fact-checkers in three southern European countries, Portugal, Spain and Italy; through cross-country surveys and newsrooms observation, interviews, focus group meetings and the application of an agenda-setting model based on machine learning. These countries have different histories and experiences in relation to fact-checking, but they all face similar challenges related to disinformation and the current political context, which justifies the relevance of this investigation. The accelerated spread of disinformation content online, such as conspiracy theories, fake news, manipulated videos and images, has had a corrosive impact on society. The 2016 American presidential elections marked the beginning of the massive online fabrication of fake news as a crucial political weapon in the electoral campaign. Disinformation creates a social and political environment that exploits distrust in democratic institutions and takes advantage of growing political and social polarization. Since then, literature has recognized the entry of the current digital ecosystem – where social networks assume themselves as the maximum authority in the distribution of news content – into an information disorder, where lies increasingly assume the role of protagonist in the debate or discussion of political and social matters. Fact-checking emerges as a crucial response to combat the use of lies, in various forms and guises, in public discourse. Identified as a practice that reveals facts using a scientific methodology, due to the rigor and transparency in the collection and processing of information, fact-checking has recently acquired greater preponderance, due to the need for journalists to analyze the veracity of declarations of interest public. However, fact-checking has faced harsh criticism, related to its effectiveness in correcting false beliefs and the selection and evaluation criteria focused essentially on political statements. This project seeks to deepen the understanding of the practice of fact-checking, addressing its journalistic processes, audience perception and effectiveness in correcting false information. With a holistic approach, this project proposes specific objectives, such as identifying and analyzing fact-checking strategies, understanding the challenges faced by this journalistic movement and evaluating its ability to monitor the proliferation of online disinformation.

The Erasmus Mundus Design Measures project in Natural products chemistry for Bioactives Application (BioNatural) will be a 2-year international program built up by 4 Universities, and 4 European countries: Lusófona University - COFAC (ULusófona, PT); Università degli Studi di Siena (UNISI, IT); Universitat Ramon Llull (RLU, ES); and, Namur University (NU, BE). BioNatural will be entirely taught in English and it will lead to a multiple master’s degree diploma. Natural products are important sustainable sources of bioactive compounds with high potential to be used in several applications, including, pharmaceutics, dermocosmetics, medical devices, food supplements, and smart materials.

The European Project CLAP Hands is an Erasmus + Program whose aim is to identify good practices in Access to the Professional Integration of Persons with Disabilities in Art and Culture.
Europe has 80 million citizens with disabilities, or 1/6 of the population (source Eurostat). Their employment rate is 50% (72% for the general population) and their poverty rate is 70% above average, partly because their access to employment is limited. The European goal to HORIZON 2020 to employ 75% of people aged 20 to 64 can not be achieved if these people are not taken into account. Accessibility and professionalization are among the top priorities of this strategy, which targets inclusive strategies and improved access to employment.
In 2003, a European declaration set accessibility as the guarantee of integration of people with disabilities into the professions of art, culture and the media. These sectors are a pool of professional opportunities. Creative practices are numerous in medico-social institutions but often limited to therapeutic, re-educational (occupational therapy), or occupational approaches with little opening to the “ordinary” social world. Beyond a better affirmation and participation of the person, the creativity opens on the professionalization. Across Europe, there are experiences of events, networks or support, for professional purposes, but these initiatives are not widely reported at the national level, let alone at the European level. On the other hand, it is in these institutions that these practices of educational mediation are the most numerous and the least inclusive because they have no or few actions directed towards the ordinary environment of life. Concerning professionals (social workers interested in art or artists interested in social work), there is an initial and continuing qualification deficit to better support individualized career paths towards these professions.
CLAP aims to qualify professionals to contribute to the professional inclusion of people with mental or psychic disabilities:
To train, to qualify the supervisors of these practices to develop the creativity of the accompanied people, to raise awareness of the accessible trades and to pass from the Occupational to a professionalization dynamic; Identify and promote the best practices of professionalization of these publics but also all initiatives to strengthen their access to job opportunities and activities; Network, share, and capitalize the achievements of practices and experiences to create access to good practices, identify reluctance and obstacles to this professionalization; Raise awareness of the professional world of culture (places, networks, groups …) but also public authorities on professionalization in sectors targeted on good practices and their deployment. Operational objectives – Initiate a European network of social and medico-social organizations, training institutes or universities engaged in professional integration through art and culture but also professionals from the “ordinary” world of culture and performing arts – Collect and promote the best practices in terms of inclusion (ergonomics, accessibility, reception equipment, mediation, existing experiences …) and better know and communicate on accessible trades, particularities and types of artistic writing, practices creative … – Build and validate a training device for professionals (social workers and artists) accompanying / training people with disabilities in creative activities and cultural production. – Create the required environment supported by new technologies and social networks but also multidisciplinary workshops to promote the research-action process – Identify pre-professionalization criteria, professionalization and access conditions to professions – Animate the device by combining all stakeholders (including local and regional authorities in their cultural competence) to anchor this collaborative culture and define the criteria for modeling and transferability
Transnational approach In a field directly related to social policies, it is important to confront, on the issues of inclusion, in cultural milieu, people with disabilities, political, technical and cultural approaches. CLAP will focus on a common core of cross-cutting work for the countries involved, respecting the contextual specificities allowing a cross-fertilization of practices. This networking will promote the identification of good practices to allow, in the long run, the possible transfer of initiatives and recommendations for the public authorities. From what the CLAP network will produce, we will be able to build a qualifying training for the supervisors of these professional practices for the targeted public.
ClimAID is an innovative project idea combining cultural heritage, climate change and Urban Art activities. The idea relies on the promotion of cultural heritage practices in tackling climate change, through arts and technologies. Climate change, according to literature, is an evolving process affecting societies and cultures that constantly had to find solutions to adjust their living according to the new environmental realities.
The impact of climate change on history and culture are often represented in climate policy and research. However, a new trend on research is arising with the reversed objective. How Cultural heritage can provide an insight of methods and good practices to manage climate changes? In order to give answers to the aforementioned, the project adapts a research methodology to identify cultural heritage best practices across Europe and then promote them through digital education and urban art. The project will create a toolbox of best practices, which will be integrated into an open resource platform. The platform will allow users to experience the full implementation of these practices in a 3D environment.
The participation of well-known universities and major cultural actors in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece and Cyprus will ensure the sustainability of the results by developing an e-learning course especially designed to provide knowledge on the impact of Heritage and Urban Arts to mitigate Climate Change for the needs of Universities, Archaeological sites, tourist guides, cultural centers, museums, municipalities etc.
Project’s activities will be embraced by an Urban art campaign with national street festivals, implementing real wall murals, act performances, music & dance contributions in several cities of project countries. The project aspires to reach out more than 2000 youth, potential beneficiaries and cultural actors due to the large scale campaign and to high impact results.

In this project we use a novel approach to tackle cancer by combining three molecular targets (p-glycoprotein, protein kinase C and the lysyl oxidase-like 2 enzime) and three synergistic scientific contributions (natural products isolation and identification, biological assays and computational chemistry) to improve upon natural products isolated in-house targeting ABC efflux transporters and PKC, and to develop novel molecular entities able to inhibit the LOXL2 enzyme known to contribute to tumor cell invasion by promoting cytoskeletal reorganization, as a combined strategy to tackle metastatic cancer and multidrug-resistance.
